Underworld Ascendant screenshots have been released

I've had the Ultima Underworld series recommended to me multiple times as great examples of the dungeon-crawler genre, but unfortunately they are so dated by today's standards that they are nigh unplayable. This is where Underworld Ascendant and its successful Kickstarter campaign come in to play as the developers are promising a modern sequel with all of the elements that made the classics... well, classic.

And after waiting for what feels like an eternity in Internet years we are now finally able to see the fruits of their labor in the form of a few screenshots that showcase the boneheaded enemies you'll get to square off against. Here they are, along with a brief comment on the art style from the Art Director Nate Wells, who previously worked on the Bioshock series, The Last of Us, and System Shock 2:

"I want to recapture a retro sense of fantasy, fantasy the way our inner child remembers it. For Underworld Ascendant, I thought, 'What if the world bore the authorship of a tabletop game?' Think of the old lead figures, the miniature play fields.

What if the game used that philosophy of everything looking and being hand-crafted? Natural, man-made. All of it looks like it was sculpted by an artist."
