Cities: Skylines is one of the best examples of how dedicated post-launch support can elevate what was already a good game in to something truly special. Not only did the developers Collosal Order patch out many bugs and issues but they also released plenty of new features and content designed as DLC for absolutely no cost.
And the same applies to the latest (paid) expansion Snowfall which brings with it snowy winters, an expanded public transportation system and a bunch of other features related to dealing with bad weather. The free portion of this update will be arriving soon and bringing with it rain, fog and various other features the developers weren't ready to announce just yet.
Here's the trailer and a short list of cool new features you can expect:
- Now is the Winter of This Content: Rain and fog for existing maps, plus a new “Winter” map theme with snow and all of its challenges
- The Streetcars You Desire: Expanded public transportation options, including easier management of existing lines – and Trams, a new system demanded by fans
- World Warmth, Too: Cold weather increases demands for electricity, unless new water-based heat systems are in place
- Plowers to the People: Build a snowplow depot to keep traffic flowing during winter weather, and employ new road maintenance systems to keep your streets in shape
- New Chirps: #yeahthereare
While the vast majority of reviews and player opinions I've gone over seem to agree that Snowfall is an excellent expansion there is one rather big problem, there doesn't seem to be enough content in it to justify the €13/$13 price tag. There are currently only three maps that support snow and with only so many new features to toy around with many are worried that the content will run out far too soon.
The good news is that much like the After Dark expansion and its new features the modders and community map makers will be quick to expand Snowfall's content and integrate it better in to the base game. So if you're on the fence whether Snowfall is worth it or not I'd suggest waiting a few weeks and then seeing what the free content update brings and what's the state on the Steam Workshop.
But if you can't wait to start your own snowplowing business Cities: Skylines - Snowfall is available now on Steam for €13/$13.
