Dota 2 artwork for the new Crownfall update starring Skywrath and Vengeful Spirit

After multiple cryptic teasers and even a lengthy delay, Dota 2's much-anticipated Crownfall update has now finally arrived. However, instead of massive gameplay changes or even the previously announced Ringmaster hero, the freshly released Crownfall update is almost centered around cosmetics - both paid and free.

The highlight of the update is definitely the interactive world map that serves as both a story-telling tool and a Battle Pass. By collecting tokens gained from playing certain types of heroes (for example mounted, nuker or crawling ones) you can unlock new pathways and with them cosmetic rewards, small story bits, as well as silly stuff like a fishing mini-game or a reverse candy shop that will take your candy and give you a plethora of goodies in trade.

Most of it is available for free, but if you want some of the fancier cosmetic variants you'll need to grab the paid version that unlocks extra routes throughout the map. It's thankfully nothing mandatory, so if you're like me and you don't particularly care about cosmetics, you can still have a lot of fun with the new system and get a couple of interesting rewards along the way. Before you begin your adventure, however, you'll definitely want to check out the short comic detailing what exactly the new storyline is all about.

As for the newly introduced Vengeful Spirit and Skywrath Mage Arcanas, those are, unsurprisingly, only available as direct purchases. Much like before, each one will set you back a rather ridiculous 35$, though you can reduce that slightly by collecting ten coins scattered throughout the aforementioned 'Battle Pass'.

The final, and perhaps most important, thing to mention is that this is only the beginning! Valve is planning to release an additional three story chapters, each with their own interactive map and cosmetics, over the course of the next few months. So if you're a fan of Dota 2, there should be plenty to do!

Once more information becomes available, most likely the day the next update launches since this is Valve we're talking about, I'll make sure to let you know. Until then, good luck collecting those tokens!

Up for some more?
