While Gwent was and still is a great game, the past few updates have clearly shown that the team is struggling to define what exactly they want Gwent to be: a silly game filled with random effects and crazy swings, or a competitive one with predictable results and a focus on planning and strategy. Thankfully, it would appear that they have now sorted out whatever internal issues they had as the recently held AMA (Ask Me Anything) on the official forums is filled to the brim with excellent changes that are coming in the next few months.
First and foremost, I am incredibly happy to say that the developers have realized how boring some of the archetypes have become and are now working on making each faction more unique and interesting to play with. The end goal is for each faction to have three different decks to play around with, which should go a long way towards preventing the ranked ladder from becoming stale.
Speaking of which, some of the highly random and controversial Create cards are going to be restricted from ranked play. You can still use them in casual play or in the Arena, but their massive variance will no longer 'compromise' Gwent's competitive scene.
Having the Arena embrace all of the random aspects of Gwent is quite a good idea
On a similar note, the developers are also working on fixing the longstanding conflip problem. The whole thing is still a work in progress, but right now they are experimenting with each Leader having a certain initiative stat that decides whether they go first or second. I'm not exactly sure how this will pan out in reality, but it's a nice concept as it gives the developers another avenue to buff and nerf problematic Leaders.
The Thronebreaker singleplayer campaign is still heavily in development, though no details have been revealed just yet. Similarly, the developers are working on brand new rewards and more interesting boards to play on, but since all of it is still unfinished they weren't willing to share more than that. They also haven't explicitly confirmed there will be a brand new faction coming in the next few months, but they have dropped a couple of sneaky little hints, so take from that what you will.
That's pretty much all of the major comments, but if you're interested in all of the developer responses I would highly suggest you head over to Reddit. The list is a bit disorganized, but it sure beats having to scroll through 30+ pages on the official forums in search of relevant information. Enjoy!
