Necropolis was originally planned for a March release, but after the console versions entered the picture the release date needed to be rescheduled. As of right now, the PC version will be available on July 12, while the consoles will get their crack at Necropolis at some point in the summer.
For those of you that don't know anything about Necropolis, its a third-person action game with roguelike elements, devious difficulty, and a procedurally generated world. Most importantly, however, you are able to delve into dungeons with up to three other friends via drop-in/drop-out co-op! Here's the appropriately titled "Death With Friends" trailer to set the scene:
While you won't see any of the official material mention Dark Souls, its quite obvious that it was the inspiration behind Necropolis' combat mechanics. You will be expected to dodge away from enemy attacks, strike only when the time is right, read enemy patterns and movements in order to not get splattered all across the floor, and naturally, learn from each and every death so that it doesn't happen again. Mindless hacking and slashing will probably do you well enough for the first few dungeon floors, but much like Dark Souls, you're going to have to "git gud" if you want to get far.
The Dark Souls-y combat is definitely a big plus for me given that I consider Dark Souls my favorite game of all time, but its the co-op multiplayer that excites me the most. There are plenty of good roguelike games out there, but I don't think I've ever seen one that allowed me to battle through hell itself with a couple of buddies by my side. Whether it'll work out and actually be balanced at the same time, I really don't know, but its certainly an idea I can appreciate.
You can learn more about Necropolis by heading to the official website, and while there may I also suggest checking out the Shadowrun series. They're pretty damn good RPGs!
