[Update #2]: Overwatch 2's next tank hero will be Ramattra - the mysterious Omnic leader of Null Sector.
[Update]: Overwatch 2 is officially nerfing Genji, Zarya, Sombra, D.Va and Kiriko... but only in three weeks!
After a surprisingly brief round of teasers, Overwatch 2's first major update - Halloween Terror - has now been unleashed. It brings with it all of the original game's Halloween skins, three new legendary skins to collect (one of which is free), the return of the Junkenstein's Revenge game mode, as well as a brand new co-op mission - Wrath of the Bride!
Much like its predecessor, Wrath of the Bride will have you take control of one of four heroes (Junker Queen, Ashe, Sojourn and Kiriko) as they run around an appropriately spooky version of the Eichenwalde fighting tricky bosses and hordes of 'zomnics.' Wrath of the Bride is admittedly a lot more dynamic than the original game mode since you're constantly moving forward instead of simply defending a static location, though the core idea is mostly the same.
What this looks like in action, as well as what the new skins are all about, that you can find out through the trailer below. Have a gander:
After playing through the new game mode a couple of times on various difficulty settings, I'd say it's a competently made yet somewhat unexciting co-op mission. All of you're really doing is going from one location to another and shooting everything in sight, which isn't really all that different from the normal game modes. I feel like Wrath of the Bride desperately needed more complex bosses and enemies to force you to adopt different playstyles and strategies, because as it stands I can't see myself repeating it more than a couple of times each year to clear out the achievements.
Speaking of which, there are no skin-based rewards on offer this year. You will get the Cursed Captain Reaper for free once you log in as a little apology for the recent server instability, but aside from that you'll have to whip out the credit card in order to get any more Halloween themed skins. The only things you can earn through the achievements are voice lines, player icons and a singular weapon charm. This was too be expected with Overwatch 2's shift towards a free-to-play system, but I can't say the comparison to previous year's events doesn't sting.
On the positive side, while the Halloween Terror event has not brought with it any sort of balance changes, I'm happy to say that Bastion has finally returned from the shadow realm and is now once again playable! Similarly, Torbjörn's overload ability has been fixed and so he too is now available in Competitive Play!
Have fun with the new game mode, and I'll make sure to let you know once the next big update goes live.
