Even though they already had an entire stream featuring the Game Director Jeff Kaplan silently stare at the camera (I'm not joking), the Overwatch team has now decided to unleash an additional Christmas gift for their players. As with last year's Winter Wonderland event, the gift in question is a simple but effective one - 5 free Loot Boxes!
From what I've seen and experienced so far these free Loot Boxes do not seem to have a higher drop chance for rare items, so don't be surprised if you leave with none of the fancy new legendaries. On the positive side, they do give you a couple of guaranteed Winter Wonderland items, so even if you're like me and you have absolutely no luck, you'll still leave with something new.
The final thing worth mentioning is that this 'promotion' will only last until January 1st. In other words, you will need to log in and claim your free Loot Boxes before that date, even if you aren't planning to open them any time soon. To be perfectly honest I doubt anyone is going to keep the Loot Boxes wrapped up for very long, but it's still good to know that they won't just randomly disappear when January 1st rolls around.
As for the future, you'll be glad to hear that there is a brand new update coming in January. The exact details haven't been released just yet, but you can expect to see a new map by the name of Blizzard World, as well as a variety of new cosmetics inspired by various Blizzard games. Until then, I wish you the best of luck with your boxes!
