As their big April Fools' gag last year Sega released The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog - a visual novel based around trying to deduce who managed to kill the fastest creature on Earth and how. Since the whole thing felt like a one-off joke that would get old within five minutes, I must admit I didn't pay it much attention when it first launched. That was a mistake!
After having it recommended to me time and time again, I finally sat down and played through The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog this week, and you know what? It's actually good! And not only is it well made, but it manages to work as both an investigative visual novel and as a fanservicy homage to Sonic games of old. Here's a little peek at what it's like:
Perhaps the best thing about The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog is that all of the characters, and I do mean all of them, are quite charming. Even someone as eternally brooding and serious as Shadow has a couple of touching moments, and since you're going to spend a lot of time interacting with all of the characters, those little moments really do go a long way.
So if you're a fan of not just Sonic games, but also the characters themselves, I'd heartily recommend taking The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog for a spin. It only takes a couple of hours to 100%, the whole thing is entirely free to play, and funnily enough, it's also the best reviewed Sonic game on Steam by a decent margin!
But enough of my rambling! You can check out The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, as well as read a few of the aforementioned reviews if you need more convincing, over at Steam. Have fun!
