With Shadow of the Tomb Raider set to arrive on September 14th, now would be the perfect time to delve into nostalgia and re-experience the series' roots. As such, I can't say it was very surprising to hear that Realtech VR is working on modern remasters of the first three Tomb Raider games.
What I did find extremely surprising, however, was that the project ended up being canceled as abruptly as it was announced! As it turns out, Realtech VR did not consult Square Enix or Crystal Dynamics before announcing the three remasters, thus forcing their hand and essentially killing off the whole project. A questionable move, to say the least.
I can only imagine this was done in a Deadpool-inspired plan to get Square Enix to greenlight the remasters, but alas the risk didn't pay off this time around. A real shame since the early Tomb Raider games are nearly unplayable because of how terrible their controls and camera are, both things the now-extinct remasters were planning to fix.
If there is one positive thing to be derived from this whole mess, it would be the simple fact that Square Enix now knows there is a considerable amount of interest in the old Tomb Raider games. So while I don't expect them to react any time soon, there is a good chance we'll be getting a series of remasters at some point in the next few years. Whatever the case may be, at least we'll 'soon' have a new Tomb Raider game to help pass the time!
