[Update #2]: The next DLC, A World Betrayed, has now been announced and pinned for March 19, 2020.

[Update]: Mandate of Heaven has now also made its way to both macOS and Linux.

The biggest problem with Total War: Three Kingdoms, especially when compared to Total War: Warhammer 2, is the diversity between the various campaigns. Once you've played a couple of the original factions, there is very little new and interesting stuff to mess around with, not even in terms of units given how similar they tend to be.

As such, you might be interested to hear that the recently released Mandate of Heaven DLC has greatly spruced up the campaign and added some much-needed variety. There's over 40 new combat units to experiment with, six new playable warlords with their own unique mechanics, as well as new origin stories for some of the most famous characters of the time period. Perhaps most importantly, the Mandate of Heaven campaign seamlessly transitions into the main campaign, with many of the most important events happening as you progress through the years.

You can get a pretty good idea of what the story is about, as well as which characters will play a pivotal role, through the original announcement trailer. Have a gander, it's a rather beautiful trailer:

Whether Mandate of Heaven is enough to keep Three Kingdoms fresh and interesting for many months to come, that still remains to be seen. It's a fun piece of DLC, but I can't help but feel like Three Kingdoms needs something a bit more drastic to bring it up to par with the seemingly infinitely replayable Total War: Warhammer 2. Still, it is a solid step forward.

My little musings aside, you can learn more about Mandate of Heaven and the features it brings with it, over at Steam. Have fun!
