[Update #2]: Many years after being canceled, Vermintide 2's PvP Versus mode is coming back.
[Update]: Vermintide 2's upcoming Winds of Magic expansion is already playable for those that have pre-ordered!
Out of all the potential features for Vermintide 2, the one I've seen the most excitement for has definitely been the Versus mode. So much so that there was even a community mod in the works that intended to make it the whole thing a reality!
However, while the mod unfortunately ended up getting canceled early on due to technical reasons, I am delighted to say that the PvP dream is not dead as Fatshark has now announced an official version - a fully-fledged 4v4 Versus mode! Here's a small teaser of what it looks like in-game:
Much like Left 4 Dead, the teams will play one round with each faction, with the winner being decided based on how successfully they've managed to navigate the level as the Ubersreik five (or four, it doesn't matter). A fairly simple system, but it worked wonders in Left 4 Dead, so I have no doubts it's going to be a compelling one in Vermintide 2 as well.
When it comes to playing as the bad guys, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise to hear that players will take control of the Special enemies like Ratling Gunners, Gutter Runners, Globadiars and so forth. What might come as a bit of a surprise is that you'll also be able to control the bosses, which could end up being a bit tricky to balance given that some of them are only really held in check due to their AI's willingness to get stuck in a simple attack loop.
Whatever the case may be, it's certainly an exciting addition to Vermintide 2, and one I can't wait to check out! If you share my enthusiasms, make sure to take a second and sign up for the Versus beta. There are no details currently available, not even a starting date for the beta itself, but I'd say it's still better to be early than late when it comes to these sorts of sign-ups!
Once more information becomes available I'll make sure to let you know. Until then, you can read a little bit more about the Versus mode over at the official website.
