In an effort to shake up the usual formula, Frictional Games have made the freshly released Amnesia: The Bunker a non-linear experience with a focus on emergent gameplay and replayability. In other words, Amnesia: The Bunker brings with it a semi-open world to explore, a fair bit of randomization to keep things interesting, multiple solutions to many puzzles, and most importantly of all, a seemingly Alien: Isolation inspired monster that will actively try to hunt you down!
Since trying to describe a horror game through words alone is a futile effort, allow me to share with you the launch trailer. That one should give you a pretty good idea of what sort of atmosphere Amnesia: The Bunker is going for, as well as what the gameplay's like. Have a little peek:
I haven't played it myself just yet, but judging by the reviews so far it looks like Amnesia: The Bunker has managed to succeed in its goal of creating a compelling, open-world horror experience. There is a bit of a downside to the new approach as the narrative is weaker than in Frictional's previous games like SOMA, though Amnesia: The Bunker makes up for it with significantly more tense moment-to-moment gameplay as the interactions with the monster are frequent and frequently unsettling.
If you're not sold on the idea of a non-linear horror game, or if you're simply curious to see how Amnesia: The Bunker compares to its predecessor, you'll also be interested to hear that there's a free demo available! The whole thing will likely take you 30-40 minutes to fully explore, though even a short run through it will let you know where exactly you stand with Amnesia: The Bunker and its gameplay style.
You can check out the demo, as well as learn more about Amnesia: The Bunker in general, over at Steam. Enjoy!
