[Update]: Twelve years after the original, the PC version of Spelunky 2 has now been unleashed!

Spelunky 2 was originally supposed to arrive in 2019, but it would appear that the estimate was a bit overambitious. According to the latest announcement, Spelunky 2's release date has now been pushed back to 2020, though no exact date has been given just yet.

"Unfortunately, I don't think we're going to get to release Spelunky 2 this year," reads the brief update. "Development is still going well and we're not far off target, but the density and detail of the game is demanding more time."

"Also, I took in the feedback about the environments from the trailer, and while I still love the overall style, we've been adding more detail, as well as increasing the contrast to make existing details pop (some were pretty subtle and compression wasn't friendly to them)!"

I've said this many times before, but these sort of delays are almost always a positive thing in my book. Sure, it sucks having to wait for an extra few months for a game you're excited about, but it does also mean that the developers care more about making a quality game than a quick buck. So here's to hoping the Spelunky 2 team manages to use this extra time to truly surpass the original, because that's not going to be the easiest of tasks!

Whatever the case may be, you can read a little bit more about this delay, as well as follow Spelunky 2's development in the future, over at Derek Yu's Twitter.
