[Update]: Bungie has now finally announced their plans for the future! Destiny 2 is going free-to-play, moving to Steam, adding a new expansion, as well as supporting cross-platform saves!
While we're likely never going to get the details, it would appear that the recent rumors about division within Activision-Blizzard might just be true. The reason I say this is because Bungie, the studio behind the original Halo games and Destiny, has now parted ways from Activision and will be self-publishing their games in the future.
"We have enjoyed a successful eight-year run and would like to thank Activision for their partnership on Destiny," reads the official announcement. "Looking ahead, we’re excited to announce plans for Activision to transfer publishing rights for Destiny to Bungie. With our remarkable Destiny community, we are ready to publish on our own, while Activision will increase their focus on owned IP projects."
"Thank you so much for your continued support. Our success is owed in no small part to the incredible community of players who have graced our worlds with light and life. We know self-publishing won’t be easy; there’s still much for us to learn as we grow as an independent, global studio, but we see unbounded opportunities and potential in Destiny. We know that new adventures await us all on new worlds filled with mystery, adventure, and hope. We hope you’ll join us there."
While I'm sure some of you will cheer this on as the ultimate solution to all of Destiny's problems, I don't think we'll be seeing the true impact of this decision until quite a few months have passed, potentially even until Destiny 3 arrives. Whatever the case may be, it'll be certainly interesting to see what happens with Destiny 2 now. Personally, I hope the Season Pass system gets the axe in favor of normal updates, because so far it hasn't exactly made a stellar impression.
As for Destiny 2's place on the Battle.net launcher, there is nothing to worry about as both Bungie and Activision-Blizzard have announced that absolutely nothing will be changing. When it comes to future Destiny games we might see a bit of a different story, but as of right now everything should be exactly the same for us players.
Once more information comes to light, most likely when Bungie announces their future plans, I'll make sure to let you know. Until then, you can read a little bit more about this over at the Bungie website.
