Overwatch 2's Lunar New Year event screesnhot of Capture the Flag game mode

[Update #2]: Overwatch 2 will be fixing many of the frustrating aspects of Competitive Play in Seasons 3 and 4.

[Update]: Overwatch 2's likely final Season 2 update has now nerfed Roadhog, Sojourn, Kiriko and Orisa.

If you were disappointed with how little the recent Battle for Olympus update brought to the table, I'm afraid the freshly released Lunar New Year event isn't much better. Nearly all of the seasonal content is stuff from the original Overwatch, including the various Capture the Flag game modes, the free-for-all Bounty Hunter mode, as well as the usual array of old festive skins.

When it comes to the new toys, you might be surprised by how little there truly is. You can look forward to a single mediocre and store-only Mei skin, a souvenir and weapon charm you can unlock through achievements, as well as the old (yet admittedly awesome) Kkachi Echo skin recycled as the grand prize for completing four of the seasonal achievements. That really is it as far as new additions to the Lunar New Year are concerned!

While there is no new trailer showing off the event, you can get a pretty good idea of what the Lunar New Year update is all about, as well as what the Kkachi Echo skin looks like, through the 2021 teaser. Have a gander:

Even though I'm beyond disappointed with how little effort Blizzard seems to be putting into events these days, I would still recommend diving into the Lunar New Year update purely because Capture the Flag is a remarkably fun game mode. It might not be for everyone, and it definitely requires you to play certain heroes to do well, but once you get into a groove it's a blast trying to avoid the entirety of the enemy team as you duck and weave your way back home with a shiny flag on your back.

Once Blizzard announces the next big update, and that's likely going to happen soon as Roadhog's nerf is still pending, I'll make sure to let you know. Until then, have fun with Capture the Flag!
